Lincoln and Olathea

The kids made their show debut Labor Day Weekend at the Amana Colonies, IA show.

Lincoln picked up a best cardigan puppy and then went on to a puppy group 2. Thanks to Judge Ruth Tessendorf.

The next day, Lincoln went on to pick up a Best of Winners for a 4 pt major under Judge Alice Inman.  It was a wonderful way to end the weekend.  Thanks to Judge Inman, Connie Whan, Kerri Carter, Missy and Chas Brees DeYoung, Rus and Sherilyn Mumme and, of course, Kathy Gibson and  for making it  possible for Lincoln and I to have too much fun.

We then moved on to the Des Moines, IA show the following weekend.  Olathea picked up her first point, and Lincoln picked up another one too.  All in all it was a great start to their show careers.

Two great weekends, sharing the wealth…

I hardly know where to start!  Kathy and I packed up the motor coach and headed a little west.  We traveled with good friends who had a spot of trouble with a tire along the way, but we all arrived safely.  And that began a weekend of good fellowship, food, dogs and a bit of winning for everyone!  In the four (4) camper group, we had several grand champion majors, a qualifying score in rally, major wins boys and girls, grand champion points, best veteran and …

After a pretty rocky show start…(Lincoln had some real fun putting on a hip hoppy show), we did alright by the end of the cluster show.  On Sunday, Lincoln picked up “best cardigan puppy’, and then went on to a Puppy Group 2.  What a difference a day makes!  Then on Monday, he decided he did remember how to gait…and took “best of winners” for the crossover 4 pt major.  Good boy, Linc!

Then we moved on to Des Moines for some more fun with friends and dogs.  Once again, we shared the wealth and everyone took a point.  Linc took “best of winners” on Saturday, and Olathea decided on Sunday she had enough of her brother getting all the attention.  She showed like a pro, and thanks to Sherilyn for taking her back in and beating me for “best of winners” on my girl!

It was a super fun ten (10) days!  Believe you me it wouldn’t have been half as fun without all the people we have grown to love and call family.  Congrats to all the winners, and let’s do it again really soon!

Pictures to follow…

One week old…take two!

We were a little more successful with puppy pictures this evening.

Rock Island Rapids (aka Rocky)

Rocky

The Rock Island Rapids section of the Mississippi River began in LeClaire.  It was a very treacherous portion of the river and it required specialized river boat pilots to navigate it.  The captains would wait under the “Big Green Tree, and wait for boats to tie up and hire them for the day.  Now the lock and dam system have eliminated the need for these pilots but the mystic of these revered captains lives on in our hometown.

Kathy and I own a little (now destroyed by the last Mississippi River flood) cottage on the old canal system.  There is nothing we enjoy more than hanging with friends around our fire pit.  (We hope to rebuild the cottage this year, and move permanently to the river!)

The railroad built the first bridge across the Mississippi between Davenport, IA and Rock Island, IL.  The steamboats were not able to get under it, so the steamboat companies sued the rail road.  Abraham Lincoln defended the railroad and won!  We now have “swinging” bridges that allow for all forms of transportation to move down and across the Mississippi.

The Princeton Narrows are just north of our home on the river.  It is just wide enough for two barges to pass.  I hate meeting barges in this section of the river, but it is home to a great sand bar.  Much fun and frivolity has occurred on that sand bar!

One week

I can’t believe it has been a week.  The babies have all grown, and a great deal of excitement has accompanied the week, but I’ll elaborate on that later. They are all thriving and growing like crazy.   I’ll post better pictures in a bit but for now, you get a sense of their progress.

Olathea means beautiful place. The Ojibwa named the hill we live on Olathea.

Unfortunately as I come to the end of this post,  I am saddened to report that Arnie (Arsenal of Defense) did not make it.  We had a severe medical crisis.  It appeared that my beloved partner, Kathy was having a stroke, so we called the medics.  The first responders and medics arrived to take care of Kathy, while they were loading her into the ambulance, I called for a friend to come and take care of the puppies and Ella.  I checked the kids and headed out to follow the ambulance to emergency.  Our dear friend arrived a short 20 mins later, but in the stress of me being gone, the chaos of the lights and sirens…Ella rolled over on Arnie.

First let me say, Kathy did not have a stroke but was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy.  This was a huge relief and she will recover fully!  But to say that I was devastated by losing Arnie would be an understatement.  I laid our big red boy to rest in our butterfly garden.  I know I  will meet this sweet red boy again one day at the Rainbow Bridge.

I will post the meaning behind each name soon!

Ella…

How many?

This was snapped today 2/3/2012.  We will take an x-ray on Monday and have a better guestimate on the number of puppies.  She continues to do very well!  I have one person “betting” on a Feb 10 delivery.
